What tires do you run on this? My FSAE team runs Hoosier R25B in a 20.5 7.0-13.

My team’s research into new tires for this year led us to discover that the idea of an “FSAE tire” is a myth. The tires that are being listed as FSAE tires are usually just the softest FF compound a company makes offered in some common sizes used by teams. I’m sure they work great on a 500kg FF but an FSAE car only weighs 200-250kg (electric cars are heavier than the gas cars but still come in around 300kg) and every team struggles to get heat into the tires. It would be great if someone would make a tire specifically for an FSAE car and our competitions.

The tire specs are on the page linked. Scroll down to “F1600 Championship Series,” that and the one below it (SCCA Formula FF) are the tires we use. I have no idea what the difference is between the two except one is $200 per set more.

In the Quebec series we used Toyo R888's. They didn’t have much grip but they were fun to drive on and were super cheap, at least for race car standards.

Neat! Never realized how barren these cars are... basically the powertrain, a frame and a seat. Best of luck this season!

Out of curiosity, how hot does it get inside the car? I build up quite a sweat whenever I go karting and I guess black body panels don’t help too much.

Also how many people does it take to run the car for a weekend? From what I recall most teams during historics at mosport had minimum 2, including driver.

Also how far off are these from a Formula 4 pace wise?

Actually now that I think about it several seconds sounds reasonable given the power and aero deficit.

Looks like you use a radial construction while we use a bias construction. The more expensive tires you are offered are a wider tire than the cheaper option.

Are they? The width on both look exactly the same.

Yup, it’s about as little car as you can have and still have something that works!

It doesn’t get too hot, the main heat source is behind you, and the airflow helps you stay cool. The only time I’ve ever been uncomfortable was when I was in the pits while the team changed springs. But once I got going again I was fine.

It’s possible to run the car yourself, a lot of club racers do. Pro teams will have one mechanic and one engineer per car. I think Indy Lights teams have two mechanics per car.

I’m not sure how far off the F4 cars they are, but a couple seconds sounds right. I’ve heard F4 cars are pretty slow.

Hoosier lists a 185/60R13 for $240 a tire or a 205/60R13 for $288 a tire. I do question the idea of putting a 205 width tire on a 5.5" rim though. A 185 is already rather wide for a 5.5" rim. Doing a quick google search for F1600 championship it looks like every car that comes up is running the 185 on the front and the 205 on the back.

Oh no, you’re misreading it. The top two are dry-weather tires used by the F1600 Championship Series, and the bottom two are treaded wets.

Look at the table below that. The “SCCA Formula FF” table. Those are the tires used on the same car but in SCCA regionals and Majors. All the specs are exactly the same, except for the price and catalog number.

And I agree, the rims are too narrow for those tires.

Didn’t see the SCCA bit. Apparently the F1600 championship tires are exactly the same as the SCCA tires but apparently the F1600 part numbers are the “Pro” tires. Whatever the hell that means. Looking at your rule book it appears you are limited to 6 tires so it might be that you order the SCCA part numbers for your own use but the F1600 part numbers are for when you want Hoosier to show up at the event with a truckload of tires to assign to drivers for that one event.

They’re also more expensive. Why though?

Probably covering the cost of my “they bring it to the event in a truck for you” theory.

They do that at SCCA races too.
